How To: Chopsticks

5 Steps to Becoming a Master

BY: MACKENZIE GOODMAN | FEBRUARY 2019

Fork. Skewer. Tongs. Spatula. Whisk.
Toss them out; you won’t need them anymore after you’ve become a chopstick master.

Except for liquids, chopsticks can conquer nearly any and every food with ease. Slippery noodles? Got ‘em. Sticky rice? Sure thing. Egg rolls? With practice (and strong fingers) – you bet. So, are you ready to say goodbye to that cluttered kitchen utensil drawer? Good. You've come to the right place.

Learn to live without a backup fork using these five easy steps to master the delicate art of chopsticking:

1. Hold the chopstick like you would a pencil

2. Place the other chopstick below the first, against your ring finger

3. Stabilize the bottom chopstick with your thumb

4. Use your pointer and index fingers to maneuver the top chopstick

5. That's it! Now get out there and start practicing (AKA eating).*

Bonus Tip: Never cross your chopsticks! Crossed chopsticks are a symbol of bad luck.

*Does your grip look different than what we’ve shown above? Does it work for you? Great! We encourage everyone to give chopsticks a try and find a method that works for you.
